Scarlett Johansson, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Carey Mulligan were among the stars at this year’s Met Gala, but who were the best and worst dressed celebrities?

The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala benefit normally brings out the best of the red carpet parade and once again the celebs pulled out all the stops, with Scarlett Johansson one of the fashion highlights.

The Avengers Assemble star looked elegant in a pale Dolce and Gabbana gown, with the embellished dress showing off her curves.

The netting detail completed the stylish look, with Scarlett keeping her hair and make-up simple to showcase the beautiful dress.

Beyoncé tried to show off her style credentials with a Givenchy Haute Couture gown, but found herself as one of the fashion misses of the evening.

The sheer sequin gown certainly showed off her impressive post baby figure but the sequins combined with the black and purple feather train were altogether rather overwhelming.

Rihanna

Carey Mulligan

In contrast, Rihanna opted to keep it simple for a change with a long black Tom Ford dress teamed with a pair of killer heels.

The only concession to her often eclectic tastes was the rather daring crocodile print, while the low back ensured her tattoos were on display.

Carey Mulligan decided to shine in a glitzy gold and silver number by Prada, although the shiny discs on the dress slightly resembled fish scales.

But while dress was certainly eye catching it was the star’s left hand which provided the main talking point, with Carey showing off her wedding ring for the first time since marrying Marcus Mumford last month.

Lana Del Rey

Actress Jessica Alba was another star working the metallic look, looking stunning in a gold Grecian style dress by Michael Kors.

Lana Del Rey moved away from her usual Hollywood glamour and instead opted for a more Gothic look, channelling the current vampish trend.

The singer teamed a silver Joseph Altuzarra dress with a black cape, burgundy lipstick and red nails, finishing the look with freshly-darkened hair.

Cate Blanchett

Kristen Stewart

Like Beyoncé, Cate Blanchett wore a dress featuring feather detailing – but the actress managed to pull off the look much more successfully.

The all-black Alexander McQueen dress was much simpler than Beyoncé’s creation, allowing the Australian to shine on the red carpet.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart was less of a style hit, having opted for an edgier look in Balenciaga.

The geometric print, clashing colours and black and white heels were certainly a daring choice, but one Kristen ultimately failed to pull off.

Emma Stone

January Jones

Fellow actress Emma Stone is another fashionista who likes to experiment on the red carpet, but The Amazing Spider-Man star enjoyed more success with her Lanvin creation.

Emma avoided the high glamour of the other ladies on the red carpet but managed to look cute in a short red dress with simple black heels.

January Jones also went for bold colour with a bright yellow Versace gown.

The ultra-bright strapless dress could easily have been a catastrophe but the simple shape and black detailing accentuated the Mad Men star’s figure and ultimately was a fashion hit.
