It doesn’t matter that plaintive US singer/songwriter Pete Yorn is the first name credited on this album, or that it’s released on credibly rootsy label Rhino – it’s still impossible to refrain from thinking: ‘Look! Hollywood bombshell Scarlett Johansson has made a second album. Fancy that!’
But then, why not? Johansson mustered a hip covers record back in 2008 and hooking up with Yorn has got to be more creatively fulfilling than advertising lipgloss.
Vocally, they’re a well-pitched team (she, husky drawl; he, plaintive yowl) but sparks never really fly on these prettily meandering guitar tunes.
Current single Relator is a perky opener; I Don’t Know What To Do whiffs slightly of pub rock.
It’s never the Johnny/June-style union it wants to be but it is an easy-on-the-ears marriage of convenience.
