The shots see the previously blonde actress transformed into a redhead, and wearing a skintight black catsuit, for her role in the blockbuster based on the Marvel Comics heroes.

Other snaps, featured in the US magazine Entertainment Weekly, show Johanssonon on set with director Joss Whedon, as well as Robert Downey Jr reprising his role as Iron Man, and Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth as Captain America and Thor, respectively.

The Avengers brings together a number of characters – including Thor and Iron Man – who have been the subject of their own blockbuster movies recently, with the addition of other Marvel heroes including Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

Gwyneth Paltrow also appears, reprising her Iron Man role of Pepper Potts, while other co-stars include Samuel L Jackson and Paul Bettany.

The movie sees Iron Man, Thor and Captain America recruited by the organisation S.H.I.E.L.D to help save the world from destruction, although little else is known about the exact plot details.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Evans revealed more about his character’s involvement in the film.

‘It’s just about him trying to come to terms with the modern world,’ he said of Captain America – whose alter ego, Steve Rogers, first appeared in a Marvel Comic in 1941.

‘You’ve got to imagine, it’s enough of a shock to accept the fact that you’re in a completely different time, but everybody you know is dead. Everybody you cared about.’

The film is due for release in both 2D and 3D formats on April 27 2012.
