The news that Scarlett Johansson and Tilda Swinton have been cast as Asian characters in upcoming blockbusters has caused outrage online.
Johansson will be playing the lead character – Mokoto Kusanagi, aka The Major – in a new live action version of Japanese franchise Ghost In The Shell.
Swinton, meanwhile, will play the Ancient One – the Tibetan, god-like master of super-powered martial arts – in Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
And ever since the first image of Johansson, and the trailer for Doctor Strange, were released recently, film fans everywhere have been questioning why Asian actors weren’t cast as these well-established characters instead.
