Black Widow AKA Scarlett Johansson has opened up on the kind of vibe the Avengers set was before she was joined by other female superheroes.
The actress who plays Natasha Romanoff first launched into the MCU with Iron Man 2 in 2010.
She starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, who starred as Pepper Potts, but by the time 2012’s The Avengers come along she was a fully-fledged superhero competing against the guys and holding her own.
With the likes of Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki) battling alongside one another, Scarlett was repping it for the women.
‘You can only imagine a decade ago when we started this it was a major testosterone festival,’ she laughed during an appearance on Lorraine today.
‘It was me and the dues and the locker-room banter.’
Scarlett added she was ‘relieved’ when the MCU incorporated Cobie Smulders’ character Maria Hill into the 2010 epic, while 2016’s Captain America: Civil War catapulted Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlett Witch into the scene.
‘By the time Lizzie’s character was introduced, Scarlett Witch, and Cobie came in and did Maria Hill, I was so thankful to have two other women in the cast. We would cling to one another.’
Now we have a whole bunch of superheroes repping, with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Tessa Thomson with Valkyrie, Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Letitia Wright’s Shuri…honestly the list goes on, joining Endgame and Scarlett is leading quite the female rebellion.
‘Now of course the universe is expansive and we’ve got so many great actors, Danai…Brie…there are many, many now,’ she continued. ‘It’s a huge relief.’
We’re just so amped to see this boss-ness from Scarlett in action, as Black Widow (who is rumoured to be landing her own spin-off in the fourth phase) takes on the mighty Thanos next week.
Avengers: Endgame is in cinemas 25 May.
