Sony have announced that they are making a female superhero movie based within the Spider-Man universe.
They may have pushed The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back from its planned 2016 release to 2018 but Sony have big plans for the Spider-Man universe.
Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) is at the helm for Sinister Six, an outing for the Spider-Man universe villains. No news yet on which villains will feature, but as Goddard is apparently a comic book nerd, it seems to be in good hands. Sinister Six is down for a 2016 release.
But enough about the villains, I am super excited as the Spider-Man universe has some really great female superheroes. Lisa Joy (Westworld) has been hired to write the script and the film has been given a possible 2017 release.
Sony’s announcement could not come at a better time, what with the recent news that the new Thor is a woman, Wonder Woman being added to the Batman V Superman line-up and the clamouring for a Black Widow movie.

It also can’t hurt that Scarlett Johansson’s newest film Lucy (which just happens to be a female led action sci-fi film) is making serious bank and getting a great reception.
Sony may not have confirmed which superhero the film will centre on, but there is no harm in speculating.
Below are five possible female superheroes that Sony could use:
1. Firestar
Firestar is a mutant with microwave abilities that was trained by Emma Frost. She has worked closely with Spider-Man and Black Cat and has many very cool abilities.
She manipulates electromagnetic wavelengths that allow her to fly and cause things to burst into flame.
2. Silver Sable
She may not have any super powers but Silver Sable is a force to be reckoned with. She is a master swordswoman, an expert markswoman, she is also skilled in gymnastics and various martial arts.
She leads mercenary team The Wild Pack and spends her time hunting down war criminals and has worked with loads of superheroes and the occasional reformed villain.
3. Black Cat
To say her and Spidey had a thing together is putting it mildly. Black Cat is an antiheroine with a past of cat burglary and revenge fuelled missions, though she does generally do the right thing (in the end).
She has had various super powers, but her best ones are her cat-like abilities, such as night vision, retractable claws, speed, agility and strength. She is also an excellent street fighter and gives plenty of sass. She was last seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as the character Felicia.
4. Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)
Jessica Drew is the original Spider-Woman (there have been a few). She has many differing origin stories, but they mainly all go back to her working for HYDRA not realising they are the bad guys, whom she then defeats. She was invited to be a member of the Avengers by Steve Rogers and in the past has teamed up with Spider-Man.
She has many awesome powers some of which are speed, super strength, superhuman hearing and smell, venom blasts (they work a bit like lightning) and the ability to cling to surfaces like a real spider.
5. Mattie Fanklin (Spider-Woman)
Mattie is the third Spider-Woman. During one of Spider-Man’s retirements, Mattie took up the mantle and impersonated him and on his return she became Spider-Woman.
She has a troubled past and is pretty feisty. She has worked with both Jessica Drew and Spider-Man and as her story is less tied to the Avengers/Hydra, to me she seems like a more likely choice (if they decide to do a Spider-Woman movie).
She has the same powers as Jessica Drew with the extras of precognition, flight, and mild telepathy.
