Scarlett Johansson has confirmed she will not be reprising her role as Black Widow in Iron Man 3, instead revealing she is hoping for her own spin-off film.
Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, Scarlett’s character in the Marvel series, first appeared on the big screen in Iron Man 2 before taking a larger role in Avengers Assemble, which is released in the UK this week.
Scarlett had been tipped to return as Black Widow in the next instalment of the Iron Man franchise, but she has now confirmed she will not be appearing in Iron Man 3.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Johansson revealed she is instead hoping to bag her own solo film.
‘I think that you build this kind of character in the hope that the fans are like, “we want more”,’ she explained.
‘I personally think there’s an awesome Black Widow movie in there.
‘A kind of Bourne film that would take the whole comic-book genre in a completely different direction. It’d be awesome.’
Revealing she has already pitched the idea to bosses, she added: ‘I’ve spoken to Marvel about it and Kevin Feige and there’s so much story to draw from, I think it’d be totally awesome.
‘But do I want to spend another three months shedding the manatee skin and squeezing back into that suit? Not necessarily, but it’s all worth it in the end!’
The star’s comments echo her previous assertion that the stars of Avengers Assemble are keen for a sequel, with Scarlett telling Access Hollywood: ‘We hope that we are able to bring these characters back — all of our characters work interchangeably in each other’s movies, but nothing’s on the table yet.’
Co-star Jeremy Renner has also hinted there could be a movie based around his character Hawkeye, saying when asked about a possible spin-off: ‘I don’t know. I think there’s always a future for everything in the Marvel world — they like to keep their options open.
‘It’ll be up to fans, I suppose, and Marvel.’
